Laura Challiss Kneebone Studio 22
I am predominantly a painter, although drawing and printing intermittently contribute to my creative process. The subject matter I choose reflects my sense of place; and I explore the landscape through images of flora and fauna in my work. The bright light and colours of Australia resonate with me. And, since living in the Royal National Park I have become fascinated by birdlife. The post-impressionist mantra of incorporating colour and contrast to covey emotion has long influenced me. I also find the experience of contemporary art enriching and inspiring. I enjoy experimenting with immiscible materials and alternate between both water and oil soluble materials. Through bold colours, subtle layers and mixed media, I seek to reach a precarious balance in my work that conveys a particular moment in time.
I was born in Zimbabwe, a country rich in wild beauty and creativity. My passion for art stemmed from a culture where things were often made out of next to nothing. Unlike most parents, my father strongly encouraged me to pursue a career as an artist! When I moved to England in 1998, I funded my studies by working in fine art gallery sales. It was a great opportunity to gain insight into the practical world of art alongside the academic one. By the time I graduated from University with my Honours Degree in Fine Art, I had my work catalogued in the Tate Britain library and I had exhibited in over a dozen art shows. At this point I was keen to learn more about how art was taught and in 2007, I completed my post-graduate studies Art Education at the University of London.
I have continued to enjoy sharing my passion for creativity by teaching art… as well as making and exhibiting my own! I moved with my family to Australia in 2013, and settled in Bundeena in 2015. Bundeena has a thriving artistic community and I have been involved in various projects including restorations, murals and festival workshops. I also run regular creative classes, “ARTime” for children and adults. It is a delight to be part of the Art Trail and to welcome monthly visitors to my home studio.
