Kerry Evans Studio 21
ARTIST STATEMENT
The colours, textures and patterns of the natural environment are the inspiration for my art –
as well as bringing so much joy to my life! We live in an incredibly beautiful world and I enjoy sharing my love of nature with others through my art and photography.
I endeavour to describe the physical form - landscapes in nature, and the landscape of the human body – by simplifying and defining the energy and essence of that form with strong, minimal line-work and bold paint application.
In my work, natural forms are abstracted and expressed by layering, cutting and scraping - this process also allows me to embrace the richness of weathering and patina on aged surfaces (I often use timber board as the painting base to help facilitate this process). I love the challenge of trying to recreate the randomness and beauty of wear and tear produced on surfaces with the passing of time.
I also relish the added dimension of attempting to capture the intensity of human emotions within our experience of life. The strong feelings and passions of our inner life fascinate me - I’m also trying to express and convey the complexity and richness of our inner psychological life with my art making.
My favourite mediums in which to work are thick palette-knife applied oil paint, as well as encaustic (beeswax & oil paint), and large scale charcoal life drawings. These mediums allow me to express the essence of my subject matter - with the added bonus of beautiful texture or translucency and depth in the material.
My art is my attempt to honour and celebrate the beauty in our world.
BIO
Kerry Evans was born in New Zealand in 1967, and moved to South Australia as a 17 year old.
Kerry originally worked in Medical Genetics – before gaining a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design, then marrying and moving to Sydney to work as a designer - later teaching perspective drawing & rendering to design students at Enmore Tafe.
Kerry has lived in Bundeena with her architect husband for the past 16 years (until recently, dividing her time between the inner city suburb of Newtown, and this patch of coastal paradise surrounded by the Royal National Park). Now that her family have grown and are independent, Kerry has decided to concentrate on pursuing her own artistic development.
She has been part of numerous group exhibitions over the past 10 years – including several ‘Art of Living Festival’ shows in Bundeena, as well as a shared exhibition in Newtown with her Graphic Designer daughter Jordan.
Kerry is, from January 2019, a keen new member of the Bundeena Art Trail – where her studio is open to the public on the 1st Sunday of every month.
