My works are influenced by an interest in the physical interaction with the natural world. ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’ is a social phenomenon that has been described as the human cost of alienation from nature. This includes diminished use of the senses, attention difficulties and higher rates of physical and emotional illness.
I believe that our essential connection with nature is diminishing in an increasingly, alienating preference for the digital platform. The immediacy of drawing is for me, a vehicle to express my physical connection with the sensorial aspects of my environment. I often blend drawing techniques into my paintings through both the structure and mark making.
To me, the most important aspect of my paintings is that I have ‘experienced’ the landscape that I am representing.
Working in this way gives me the tactile and sensorial memory to transfer my physical and emotional experience via the medium of paint, mark making and compositional freedom.
