| Penelope Wood has an extensive background in art and design. Following a creative family upbringing in Clontarf, Sydney she went on to study at the National Art School in the 60’s. Since that time she has enjoyed a career of creativity, working in Europe and Sydney as graphic designer, director and lecturer. In 2001 Penelope ventured north to pursue art and natures inspiration. A stone house with rain forest setting in Bangalow as her home/studio, she initiated the creation of her Australian Native Art Sculptures. Inspired by nature’s grace and fluidity, Penelope works with natural materials to create unique, sculptural works of tribal influence and tranquil rhythm. These rare, handcrafted, interpretations of birds, fish and flora reflect classic curves and warm earth tones as they grace tall walls or leap from pedestals. Penelope’s individual style and varied techniques combine native flora and timbers with rare papers, art motifs, print methods and various finishes to create works of a rustic quality that vary in size to over a metre. These unique works have been shown at Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens with great success, and since 2002 have been exhibited in over twenty galleries along the east coast of Australia, selling nationally and to international travellers. In September 2009, Penelope joined Art Trail and has since worked from her home studio creating art sculptures for her Art Trail gallery, exhibitions and private commissions. Sydney exhibits include Craft NSW in the Rocks, and Art Trail Gallery, Studio 3 open the first Sunday each month or by prior appointment. |
